Default Collapsed lifter???

Hey all,
my engine has developed a problem... it taps. (not knock) it's a tapping noise...sounds like it's coming from the valve train. the engine idles ok, though not great, but it runs really rough if you try to accelerate, and the engine shakes a bit. Also, the vacuum gage reads ~20 inches, but the needle vibrates ~1-2 inches. I'm thinking it's a collapsed lifter. any other suggestions/ideas. the only reason I doubt it is cause I didn't realize a dead lifter could make the engine run that rough, but maybe it can. any ideas/advice would be helpful. thanks!
