Default How can my engine be over full? drained both plugs!

I know this sounds stupid guys.....First oil change on this 90 GT, but I drained both front & rear oil drain plugs & changed oil filter.

I had bought the big 5 qt jug of oil so I know I didn't add too much, but the dip stick reads WAY OVER FULL!!

The dipstick & tube do not appear to have been changed or altered. Engine oil is clean so I know I drained out all the old oil.

What gives??

Oddly enough I had the same thing happened on my Cobra last oil change. Drained both plugs, new filter and 5 new quarts and it's reading a little under 1 quart overfilled. I know I drained all the oil so I just left it and I'm having no problems 3000 miles later.

This is with the OEM dipstick BTW.

the fl-1a filter will suck most of that "over filled" oil, so don't worry crank it up and drive it a little bit. on my 351w it takes 6 qts on my new build i had top put 7 in to get it to read right after 5 miles of drving

I work for a ford dealer and when we change oil on a 5.0 we only add 4.5 to 4.75 qts. because you can never actually get all the oil out of the engine unless you drop the pan and also the oil is still on the walls of the cylinders some what so you can not actually drain all 5 qts. In my stang i put about 4.5 to 4.6 qts. in and i reads exactly at the top of the full area.

Guys-
Thanks for all the replies. Since the oil change I've driven about 20 miles now, but still reads way over. Since I drained both plugs & filter and added 5qts I know I'm safe but it is a little odd......

I have to admit I feel pretty stupid for posting such a retarded question, but it just doesn't make any sense. The dipstick p/n E7SE-6750-BA looks stock and from changing the valve cover gaskets last week it was pretty obvious that the engine is bone stock.
I have no reason to believe that anybody has changed the dipstick, but I guess stranger things have happened.

Thanks to all again!

not a problem man. just next time fill it with 4.5 qts start the engine let it run for about 2 minutes and then wait 2 mintues for the oil to drain down. Then check the level if it reads right then thats cool. If it reads low add the next half quart and then check it again.

Dont worry, man. This is not a dumb question, I think a lot of guys on here had the same question but were just afraid to get blasted for posting it.

I always put about 1/2 qt in the oil filter and lube the gasket of the filter before replacing it, and then add the rest of the 5 qts, it always reads perfect.
