help, probably stupid problem after rebuild...
Hey guys, just got my motor back in my car after rebuilding it. Having a problem though. It doesn't want to start, and I have fuel and spark. I forgot to put my timing pointer on, so to get #1 to TDC I used a coat hanger to feel for the top of the piston travel. I've used that method before with no problems, but maybe that's where I'm having my issues? Anyway, did that, set the rotor to fire #1, put it together and crank, and it won't start. I would think that method would atleast get it close enough for it to try to start, but it's not even sputtering or anything. Only thing it does is depending on where I have the dizzy the motor will get spinnin up to bout 1100 according to the tach, so it's like it's kinda firing and building up momentum maybe?
I dunno I'm not sure, but shouldn't I atleast be able to get some sort of life out of it with my base timing method? I know it's not as exact as the method in the tech section, but then that means I gotta go hunt down my timing pointer. I'd rather not do that till I see if you guys think that's my problem or what.
Thanks, sorry for my retarded question

A little bit more info is the car has a trick flow stage 1 cam. When I pulled the motor apart the dot on the crank sprocket was aligned with a 0 on the cam sprocket ( might have been vise versa) but either way, that's how I reinstalled it. Dot to 0.

well I checked and have spark, by visual verification. Pulled a plug and touched it to the block while cranking. I have fuel cuz I can smell it and the plugs are getting wet. Compression, well as far as my cam and crank are in time with each other, which they should be seeing as I put them back in the way they came out. So that leaves timing. I'm almost positive I'm not 180* off. I stabbed it about 3 times, everytime feeling for compression on #1 and then creeping it along to TDC. That's why I'm kinda stumped here.

I'm stumped. spark plug routing is all correct. I tried turning while cranking and it wouldn't even stumble. best I can think of is doing a cyl leakage to see if my cam-crank position is off, but I would think if that was off I wouldn't be able to get the compression stroke up to TDC because it would be keeping a valve open or somethin. I'm not really sure waht's up.
