Need T5 info ASAP!
Hope I don't break any forum protocol, but I am in a tight situation here. I just bought an '85 GT 5.0 5 speed. I absolutely love this car, but the tranny has a hooped 4th gear. From the research I have started, it seems to be a common problem? I need to get this thing going ASAP and am dropping it off at the tranny shop tomorrow. Is it worth rebuilding the stock tranny? I heard T5s are junk. Is this true? If it is, what should I replace it with? If I should rebuild it, what should I make sure they do to it? I plan on getting the motor into the 350-400 HP range, I do a lot of street driving in heavy traffic (Los Angeles) not much drag racing (some sreet drag nights), some auto crossing and a lot of highway driving.
Thanks for any and all help!

RE: Need T5 info ASAP!
After doing much research, I decided a rebuild is not worth the $$$. I got a used one from the junkyard and it should last for the year I will need to get my car in shape.
Thank you for the replies. I will be doing as suggested and going with the TKO 500. I will not be building this car to over 500 lbs/ft so it will handle everything I need. The cheapest I have seen these trannies is around $1,600..is there a source to get these from for less?
As to why I can't just skip 4th...technically I could-that's how I got it home. BUt it sucks to drive like that. I do a lot of freeway driving in SoCal and 4th is just too necessary. Gotta have it.
Thanks again!

Be careful when you install the junk yard one. They might have sold you one out of a 4-cylinder.
I had that happen to me and the gear ratio is very different.
As far as the skipping 4th when I lost my 2nd gear it was 2 days till the trans blew apart.
Then wouldn't drive at all because peices broke and locked the trans.
