If its not that check your starter for heat soak or the distributor. My distributor was going out and when the car got hot it would kick and buck and shut the motor off for a split second. If I turned the car off and tried to restart it the starter would sounds so sluggish as if my battery was dead.

my 85 did that everytime I shut it off as the headers wrap around the starter so in between jobs today at work I swapped a new mini high torque starter from a 92-95 mustang an solved the whole issue!!!

i had same problem on my 86 vert. turned out to be the distributor module. easy way to check is to take a hair dryer, and when the engine is cold...like first thing in the morning heat up the distributor and mod; then see if it starts. if not....there ya go

could be heat soak on the starter....or perhaps too much engine timing..
