at the end of the connector is the SPOUT its just a plug just pull it out thats all you have to do

well, does your engine already run? if it already runs then you do not need to find top dead center, that is the first step when installing the distributor without knowing where it came from :P you just need to hook up your timing light and do what these guys have already told you.

After your done do you plug the spout in again and what would be a good setting for the timing, Does it matter if you have changed the cam and the heads sry if I'm asking stupid questions just want to get it right,

after you are dont timing the car yes put the spout back in and every car is differnet with timing you will just have to play with it or take it to a dyno
