Default Removing Dizzy Gear Help

I am trying to remove the steel gear from a stock 88 5.0 dizzy. I bought a complete motor that came with a MSD Dizzy, box and coil. From what I can find the dizzy has a iron gear.

Can I just take the one off my old dizzy and put it on the MSD? I have removed the pin from the gear on the old dizzy. Just can't figure out how it comes off from there.

You have to hold the gear in a vise or set it on top of the vise with the dizzy upsidedown so the gear will slid off the bottom, pound the dizzy shaft out of the gear with a rubber mallet or a peice of wood and a hammer. It shouldn't be too hard.

Make sure both are the same OD first, to remove it without causing any possible damage to the gear, you need a puller to remove them after driving the lock pins out. I always use a P/S pulley puller, and has worked fine.

..... needed to be more specific...... shaft OD, which would be gear ID....... measure shaft OD and no need to remove the gear to find out......

Will do. If its different I will just order a new gear for the MSD. This dizzy should be much better than what I have currently.

You could use a heat gun to warm the gear as well...

Let me ask you guys this. Is there a easy way to tell if the gear currently on the MSD dizzy is steel or iron?
