I had my dad watch it while running and he said it did not look like it wobbled. The edge of the rubber has cracks in it. How do I know if it has spun for sure though? I'd rather not spend $70 on something I don't need.

The only real way I know how to know is to pull the timing cover off and line up the timing marks on the chain and then install the cover, pointer, and balancer to see if your pointer is on 0 degrees or not.

Well it runs best when the 10* mark is in the hole of the marker, not the edge. Keep in mind it still doesn't run perfect by any means there, but it runs best. Does that sound like it's most likely the balancer?

i say do what project said...pull the cover and check the timing marks...also use a level to make sure there 100% dead on.. then reinstall......and while you got the balancer off...take a look at it and check it out..you can tell pretty easy, push and pull on it. give it a good once over...if you have any doubts...change it..and maybe before you do. make sure you looking setting the correct timing mark on the correct spot...you can put some whiteout on the grove for 0* so it shows up better.

I did pull a plug today. It's black and smells like old gas. I'm going to clean them all off. I carefully put a screw driver in the #1 cyl when it was most of the way up on compression stroke. When it hit the top and barley moved down, like maybe 1/8th" or so, the balancer read about 10* don't remember if it was btdc or atdc though. Does that sound about right?

Oh, and plugs are gapped at the stock, .054 I have I believe stock coil with (new) borgwarner cap and rotor, (new) duralast (lol) wires and (new) motocraft plugs.

So I finnaly got to clean the plugs. I also regapped them at .045. It runs much better and doesn't backfire. I reved it up to 3k with no issues, but at idle it revs up a bit then down low up higher then low and slightly higer then goes down and dies. Could that be timing related? maybe a vacuum leak?

Also what should the timing be set at with the plug thing unhooked? (i went blank on what that little thing you pull out of the harness.)
