Default Timing Advanced

I have a 95 mustang GT with 138K miles. Ever since I bought it, it seems as guttless as can be. I set the timing (with the spout disconnected) spot on and the idle would flux then die. I found that advancing the timing smoothed out the idle to right where it should be and it even passed emmissions. It runs okay, but it is still guttless as can be and craps out right around 3000 RPMs. The volts are low when the car starts and I have been through two alternators in one year. The Check Engine light occasionally comes on for a moment then turs off again (never long enough to scan it). I hate having a 5.0 but no power. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It had alot of work done before I got it. Flowmaster mufflers, headers, and stuff. But I see four cats so I believe they must be stock. I should mention it is not a little advanced it is way out. I also found a set of stock denso fuel injectors in the trunk when I bought it, But the injectors on the car now are the same number and everything. I replaced the smog pump with a new stock one, and the fuel pump and filter with little result.

first thing you need to do is get the car back in time... after that, since you have (possibly) stock cats, try either removing one of the O2 sensors, or loosening the header to H pipe bolts slightly. When i first bought my cobra, i ended up having bad cats, and the car was DOG *** slow after 3500 rpm's

start at 10* w/ spout out

then fix all the vac leaks and do the iac

after that, advance the timing to about 12* - 14* but if the idle is not set right, it won't idle well to do the timing to begin with
