Knocking sound coming from rear

Ok so I have a 1988 GT. And theres a nice knocking or clangin sound coming from the rear end. It has aftermarket 4.10 gears. Not sure how many miles are on them. When you are accelerating you cant hear it, or when you are breaking you cant hear it. When Im just coasting its just knocks and it gets faster with more speed. As soon as you hit the brakes though it goes right away. I was told it could be a bad u-joint or a chiped tooth on the ring gear. What do you guys think?
