ok so i did that test, and got 2 complete revolutions, so im assuming its a 2.73 gear. So with that knowledge i put the 16 tooth speedo gear and its way off.....with that said im assuming it has to be the speedometer cable or the speedometer itself....anyone agree?

you don't have a speed sensor on an 86....it's all mechanical = drive gear/ assembley, cable and speedo head unit

well most likely you have stock 2.73 gears and if the gear on the out put shaft inside the tranny is the correct one, I believe it should be yellow then the ONLY OTHER THING IT CAN BE IS THE SPEEDOMETER ITSELF!!!

oh and for 2.73 gears I believe 17 tooth is close to what you need on the drive assembley if you have it mated to the 7 tooth yellow gear on the output shaft, shine a light in the hole and see what color it is, cause if it's black it'll require a different combo as the black one on the output shaft is a 6 tooth

Yeah i know there are two different output gears, I have tried the 16,17,18,20,21 for awhile i drove with the 18 tooth in, i put the 20 in this afternoon and its the same as the 18 on my speedometer....i do believe the speedo has to be wrong. so with that said do you still want to sell that cluster? if so pm me when you read this.
