Default just got an 87!!

Hey guys, I just got an 87 5.0 aod and needed some help.

At the top of my list is, when it shifts gears there's a good kick, could this be a problem of maybe a shift kit? I was told that the trans was rebuilt, and I'm guessing that there's no way to find that out without looking inside.

Another thing is, I'm not too comfortable with the suspension is there anything I can check for to make sure they're good and possibly an upgrade, this car is going to be used only for street.

The last thing I needed help with is that my speedometer doesn't work, which seems to happen to all 87's, any suggestions on how to fix it.

All your posts will be much appreciated since this is my first 5.0, previously owned a 96 GT, and I plan to make the best out of it.

I'm guessing its an automatic, it could possibly have a shift kit in it because the stock transmission barely kicks at all.

As for the suspension, make sure everything is tighened up, bushings are good, etc.

For the speedo, when you say its not working do you mean that it doesent read ANY speed or its just off a certain MPH? I've never heard of all 87's having problems with their speedometer not working.

poorly adjusted TV cable would cause the trans to kick hard, and within a couple months you'll be replacing the trans. get it checked, quick.

if the speedo isnt showing anything then its probably your speedo cable. easy fix. $14 part put a new cable in.

+1 ^^^ TV cable...it is attached to the TB, easy to move & play with....as far as the speedo, could be the cable or speedo sensor if you have cruise control...87-88 fast years for stock Mustangs...enjoy!
