Gear oil

i have seen many posts lately about how you cant use gear oil in manual trannies but that is far from the truth, i personally used redline gear oil because my mechanic said it worked a lot better than atf and i wanted to show you guys that it is ok to use it, and its actually better than ATF heres a link to the stuff i used its 9.15 a quart http://www.redlineoil.com/products_g...sp?subcatID=18

Jeezz...I hate to be the one to tell you...it will work fine for a while but the manufacturer of the tranny states NOT to use it since the gear oil ruins the synchro cones. If you've seen them...it is basically a friction material bonded to a metal cone. It sort of acts like a clutch to slow the blocking ring to allow the gears to mesh.

I thought the same thing...I was going to use gear oil...figured it was much better since it is thicker and found out why not to use it. Besides the heavier oil just takes more power to move so it adds to parasitic loss.

did you read the description of the product? "Provides excellent protection of gears and synchronizers and its balanced slipperiness provides a perfect coefficient of friction, allowing easier shifting."

cant argue with that. It says its for manuel trannys. Good enough for me plus Red Line is great stuff.

Obviously, do what you want. I have a '69 Mach I that uses gear oil in the tranny..so that would be perfect for it...so there is no surprise that it states that it is good for synchros on the label. The synchro assemblies are different on the late model T-5's and such. I've read that the gear oil will ruin the bond of the material. Only trying to help. Like I always say whatever works...

I wouldn't use gear oil of any kind, because it doean't hav ethe detergant properties like ATF, and I'm sure Redline makes an ATF...?
