Default gas in oil?

I was looking at my oil and thought that I smelled gas. The car was on and has been running a little rich, so that might have been the smell. Anyway, How would gas get in to the oil pan. I know that I don't burn any oil and I have great oil pressure. I'm thinking that I have a bad injector but not sure. I have been told that if you get to much gas into a cylinder it would leak by the rings and mix witht the oil. I haven't noticed an increase in how much oil I have in the pan so I really don't think that it's happening but could be wrong. Oh by the way it's an 88 LX 50 5spd.

It's called cylinder wash (to much fuel in a cylinder).

You don't get cylinder wash when the car is running though.

That's normal. There will always be gas in the oil eventually. You must be overdue for an oil change. The gas that fills each cylinder while the engine is running but firing another cylinder will leak past the rings and into the oil pan. If you have an older motor with larger ring gaps, it'll happen sooner. That's why oil should be changed atleast every 3000 miles. The oil will breakdown sooner as the fuel mixes with it, and the acids and stuff from the fuel is not good for the engine bearings either.

Even if your engine has not been run for a full 3000 miles or so, but sits in a garage most of the time like mine does, you still need to change the oil atleast once a year.

Yes you do if the car is running too rich, unburned fuel will wash the oil off the cylinder wall and create faster ring wear. I would look into this and make sure the car is not running too rich, over time it can really cause the engine to wear.

How do I know if the car is running to rich? What I mean is how would find out why it's running rich? I have checked the timing and it's at 10 degrees. I have changed some of the vaccum hoses and have checked the plugs. I have added an H-pipe with high flow cats. I know have a full exhuast system. Do you think that I could have some bad injectors?

Could be injectors. Does the car have black smoke when you get on it? You could put it on a dyno with a wide band O2 sensor and then you would know what you A/F ratio is, amoung other things

I don't notice any black smoke when I get on it. I did when I first bought the car about a month ago but not lately. I just resently changed out the old cats with a high flow cats. The car is still has the old speed density system and might make it harder to get the car right (at least for me). I was also thinking of doing a dyno run and seeing if the A/F mixture is right. I'm also thinking that fuel pressure regulator might be screwed up and letting to much fuel in. In my old 92 mustang I was getting about 13-15 miles a gallon in the city and about 22-24 on the high way. I think that was great for a 5.0. In my 88 5.0 I get about 11 in the city and about 13 on the highway. That's a big change. I wonder if has something to do with the mas air system that was on the 92 and I plan on converting my speed density to mas air soon.
