I heard they are. I have a mark VIII fan (I think VIII, I forget how far the mark's are nowadays lol) and it isn't really that loud. I do need to eventually upgrade to a 3g alt but I have very little electrical loads right now. I had a 30 amp switch hooked up for the on/off but it finally burned out on me the other day. Now I need to find a decent looking 40 amp that isn't huge.
