Default 82 with 87-89 wiring fuel gauge problems

just bought a 82 stang, real clean platform to start with, the PO put in a 87-89 dash and tryed to wire it himself, nothing worked when i got it, i got the oil pressure/temp/volt gauges working, and im trying to get the fuel gauge to work...i THINK the car still has the 82carb sending unit in the tank...will this work? and if i need to replace the cluster can i use any 87-93? 4cyl or 8cyl??

The sending unit will work the same you just need to trace the wiring or get a wiring diagram for the 82 to see what wires going to the dash are the ones for the sending unit and make sure they plug into the proper pin positions on the newer style cluster. Even between early fox bodies (79 - 86) there are differences in the pin positions for some gauges this is from personal experience.

As far as differences between the 1987 - 93 cluster check out the link below on my web site it should answer any questions about them for you. The only difference you will find with the 4 vs. 8 will be the tach and in later years the speedometer.

Differances in 1987 - 89 & 1990 - 93 Instrument Clusters

Hope this helps.
