lol, i thoght it was alot bigger. yes it has one, my mistake mjr46. its pretty small. so i removed the cluster and tested the gauge outside of the car and it reads about 17 ohms so it sounds like its ok. im really thinking of using my 87 dash since this one is so beat then i remembered a 87 cluster needs a 87 sending unit in the tank right?i have all the stuff to swap it over except that and the 87 column.so if my gauge is ok how can i check the wiring mjr46?

I know I'm not the one your asking, but in an effort to get ya going again, yes, the senders are different, so use the 87 sender. As far as the wiring goes, it's not as high tech as a pro would do, but it will work. Ground the yellow striped wire in the connector that plugs into the sending unit and then with an ohm meter, connect the black to a good ground and the positive to the yellow striped wire at the connector that plugs into the gauge cluster. If the ohm meter reads 0.00, your good. You might see 0.03 or so, but you are looking for continuity, which you got if you see readings like that. If your ohm meter does nothing and you are CERTAIN that you have good connections, then you've got a wiring issue.
I honestly think the problem was with the lack of IVR. I just didn't say it as eloquently as MJR46.

all to need is a ohmeter to check the wiring probe one end up by the cluster and the other end down my the tank, do the same for both wires, when looped in series the ohmeter should read continuity, and then pull one end and touch it to ground, it should read infinate resistance, that test is making sure the wire is not shorted to ground, if all checks out okay = bad intake unit, personally I'd drop the tank and test the most likely culprit to end the chase
