i have a 1990 mustang gt and i have replaced 3 starters in the past 3 weeks (two of which in the past 4 days) there is metal shavings off my flywheel. now does the starter have to be spaced? if so how much? i am confused i think that the starter is going to far and not meshing with the flywheel flush. the starters just freeze up and wont throw anymore after a few days maybe a week. i dont understand and need to solve this because anyone who has done it knows its a pain in the ***.

What brand starter are you getting? Is the flywheel stock? Generally, no shimming is needed. Is it making odd noises when starting? Grinding and such?

are you using a 4 1/2 mod starter or a mini torque... no there is no shiming.

I 'd inspect your flywheel ring gear for damage, that may be the whole prob
