TIMING OUT BAD..pls HLP
my 94 mustang was sputtering at low rpm's.. talked to one guy and he told me to bump the timing a little bit..in which i know nothing about...and i did it got worse and better then WORSE again...now i cant even get the thing to start so i can put a timing light on it!!!like i said dont know much about so step by step would be great...thnx

well first question is, how much did you bump up the timing? Generally a good rule of thumb when changing timing is to change it by 2 degrees at a time, then make sure it works, no pinging etc etc. Then if it deems worthy of more change, another 2, then repeat process.
Was it ONLY sputtering at low rpm's or was it throughout the rpm range at all?

no it was just low rpm's..To be honest IDK how much i bumped it...im an idiot
and as soon as it started sputtering my buddy just told me to turn it a little counter clock andi did...how can you tell how many degrees you have moved???i know theres the marks on the harmonic but how do i relate them to the distributer???and when i set it on tDC is it BTC or ATC...i hear a bunch of people saying like 10 is the factory??idk man im lost..thnx for all replies..

your buddy is clueless as to what causes hesitations and in telling you to bump the timing he was totally wrong, but now that it is out of time, have someone crank it while you rotate the dizzy until it starts again then when setting timing ask your buddy if he knows what the spout connector is??? on a 94 it is over on the passanger side strut tower in front and needs to be removed when setting base timing, once you get it to run, things to try to cure the hesitation are clean the maf and look for vaccum leaks but above all run a koer test and check for codes that'd lead you to where a problem may lie

WELL
umm ok well also my also idiot of a friend has tried setting back to tdc then once or twice he thought the dist was 180 out so he actually pulled it out and moved it teeth down below...how can i start all over?? i have a timing light but first i ahve to get it to crank right??? app it

he pulled it cause he thought it was 180 out?? wtf....word of advice ban him from touching your car right now, cause now we have to undo the mistakes just to get to the root prob, anyway pull number 1 plug and roll motor over until you feel it blow air out while holding your finger over hole.......once it blows air out, line pointer up on up on 0 on the balancer, at that point you can drop dizzy in so tfi is pointed in proper direction and so that the rotor is pointing to number 1 on the cap

heheheh. charlie....do me a favor
get a big wood stick in black sharpie write "BAN STICK" across it and proceed to destroy your friend with it.
do as MJR stated above, pop your dizzy cap back on, make sure all the wires are going to the right cylinders(hopefully you didnt F with those)
pull the spout connector
start your car and point your timing light at the balancer.
as stated above get it to read 10* on the balancer.
tighten down the dizzy hold down bolt. recheck your timing is at 10*.
plug in your spout and you're back in business!
then fix your other issue. let us know how it turns out
