Default Thunderbird disc rear end

I have a mid 80's turbocoupe t-bird and the body is junk but the drivetrain is still good. But anyways i never realized the rear end was a disc until i got to lookin at it today. It looks like a 8.8. The suspension is the same as my mustangs too. What does it take to put this disc brake stuff on my mustang?

If its an 8.8" rear, I'd just pop it the t-bird rear...most of those had 3.73's...you can spin the rear axle one rev. and count how many times the pinion turns...the axles are about 3/4" longer than the Mustangs...I bolted a t-bird 8.8" to my 89 Coupe with no problems...You will need e-brake cables from a 93 Cobra...

what about the master cylinder? will it be ok or will it have to be upgraded as well, since youd be using the rear disk brakes instead of drums

using rear disk you'll need a new BB and do the 4-2 or 3-2 port conversion in order for the rear disk to operate properly. there are lots of write ups on this.

The 87-93 cars had a 3 port master cylinder. You need to convert to a 2 port M/C and the lines too. I was lucky when I did my rear disc conversion...79-86 already have a 2 port design...

^^^ exactly what he said.

and i dont know how true this is but most of the write ups say you need a new BB from a car that has 4 wheel disk and do the port conversion in order to have proper pedal pressue and proper breaking. so using the stocker and doing the conversion on disk break, you might have slop in the break pedal.

hwo does your pedal feel 86hogt? does any know if this is true?

...I did have to put a rear break proportioning valve (from Summit)...I did not change the master cylinder, the car braked Very Good & the Pedal was EXCELLENT! ..I believe that you can use a 93 Cobra or 94-95 Mustang master cylinder if needed as well...

I'm still using the stock brake booster. On the contrary, it makes the pedal stiffer becasue there's less boost, see. It's when you use a master cylinder with a too small of a cylinder diameter, the pedal will be spongier. And I used a Summit proportioing valve as well. It bolts right up to the firewall union. I didn't have to splice, cut, or flare a single line on my swap. I'd like to upgrade to a bigger booster some day though. They stop well, it's just that it takes more effort than I'd like.
