Default H/C install...spark timing question.

I just installed a set of gt40p heads, tfs1 cam, and new timing chain/gears. I set the 1 piston so it was flush with the head, pulled the gears and chain, installed the new ones with the alignment dots facing each other. I found the Tech sticky about stabbing your distributor, but have a question that I felt wasnt answered there.

When stabbing the dissy, the idea is to have the rotor hit the #1 spark plug location while the #1 cylinder is in the proper stroke, right? When I stab the dissy, the pole thing goes into the block and mates with the cam, the rest of the dissy (not the rotor) spins freely. Why cant I just make and blind stab and spin the rest of the dissy around to my mark(#1spark plug) and be done with it?

Im not trying to take the easy or lazy way out here, I just want to fully understand what Im doing.

thanks

because when you install your bracket and hook up your tfi module again you wont be able to rotate anymore. thers just things that can get in the way when going to set the timing. when you install the dizzy to the front(thers alittle mark on the bottom of the dizzy ) and line the marks up it gives you room to rotate and set correct timing, also enough room to advance if you want

Ok, so it is that simple. The msd distributor that came with the car doesnt have any marks on it, but I can imagine what you mean.

Thanks
