is there a way you can tell if a car has gears without taking it apart

jack it up and rotate the wheel 1 full turn while watching the driveline to see how many times it turns

also is your car a stick? whats its rpm around highway speeds?

by doing that what how can we find the gear ratio is it 1 wheel turn = 3.7 driveline turn for 3.73 gears??

if they are stock and housing has never been into look on the tag on the rear it'll say something like 2L....73....... or 3L...08...ect ect

(don't mean to steal the thread but) any one have a link to a "decoder" for that tag mjr is talking about, I have my numbers...not with me, but I crawled under there and got them yesterday...now I need to know what they mean.

axle codes:
M = 2.73's
Z = 3.08's
E = 3.27's

the 2L...73 = 2.73's...the 3L...08 = 3.08's and 3L...27 = 3.27's

Mark your wheel and your drive shaft. Turn your wheel one full revolution while paying attention to how many times your shaft rotates.....according to how many times the drive shaft rotates thats the gears you have.
