Default Help with friends brand newish 91 fox

My buddy just got a 91 foxbody and has a question about his tranny. Everytime he tries to shift into reverse, he gets grinding. My first thought is that it was synchros, but is there a synchro on reverse? If he ****s into 5th first, then reverse, there is no grinding. To me, this is a dead sign that it is synchros. But again, some people have told him there is no synchro in reverse. Halp????

there is no syncro in reverse. putting it in 5th stopped it from spinning making reverse easy to go into. no biggie they all do it for the most part.

btw you gonna get on COD4 anymore?

yea i used to get the same thing if i shifted real fast, but i usually just shift it into first then reverse, that way everything has time to cool down

Grinding in reverse is a sign of a dragging clutch, meaning the clutch isn't releasing all the way. Either the cable is out of adjustment (easy to do on mustang, just lift up on the clutch pedal) or the clutch is worn out.

There is never a syncro in reverse, in any tranny. Reverse gears are straight cut instead of helical like all forward gears, which is why reverse is generally harder to get into than a forward gear, and why you get the gear whine in reverse.

Ok that's kinda what I thought but wasn't sure. Oh and yea I'm sure i'll be on, I know it's been a while. Been trying to play some GTA:IV lately. If i'm on, send me an invite and I'll play.
