need to check the lift on a cam
 

i just got a new motor, a fresh 306 from a guy i know, it had a cam in it but he didnt know the specs or brand anything... so right now i have a mystery cam sitting on my table. does anyone know a way to at least measure the lift? so i can have some idea of what i have

the kind of cam should be stamped on the back of the cam

yea thats what i was told but when i pulled it there were just a couple letters.... i'll take a pic of it and post it up here in a sec
it looks like a 2h21 and it has 2 K's on opposite sides on the back

With a digital caliper..... take the measurements shown.....

Once you have calculated lobe rise, multiply it by 1.6 to get valve lift.

i took a pic but it didnt show the marks too well so i went into paint and made them a little clearer in case someone can decipher it lol
it looks like either 2421, 242L, 2H21, or 2H2L....... i dunno

thanks joel. i've always ordered my cams new so i knew what they were to begin with but, this is just somethin i havent had to deal with before

Use a pair of vernier or dial calipers and measure it as Joel described. If it's not too wild, then that method will give you the lift. The most accurate way to measure lift would be with it in the engine and a dial indicator set up on a lifter or push rod.
