axle question

axle question
I am going to go into my rear end this winter and I haven't decided if I am going to go up to 31 splines or keep the 28's and get some stonger axles. Are 31's a must or will some strong 28's be ok. I don't want to have to buy these parts again, but I have a good trac loc in the car now and not sure if I should spend the $$ for a new carrier.
Any thoughts would be appreciated, thanks
Edit...guess I should have read the other thread about the same thing first...oops

I want to upgrade, but if I can hold onto the cash, I will. It isn't a drag car so I didn't know if I had to have em
But I may just say F it and do it up right....I wouldn't be happy if I have a fear of them going.

There is supposed to be a GREAT difference between worn stock 28 spline OEM's and good new aftermarket axles. Things as how they heat treat, the alloy used, lack of taper combine to make a strong alxe. Take that datum and combine it with the fact that every time you go up in spline count you increase rotating mass, you could go exotic and get gun drilled axles but that seems outside of your scope. If you are just mostly driving the car about no need to upgrade your spline count (and required differintal, and setup). If racing perhaps its worth it

Alloy brand 28 spline axles sell from Summit for right at 200 dollars. The come with ne studs, wheel bearings and seals. They seem well made and I have a friend running them in his blown Mach1. So far so good. I think until you get up into some heavy duty power they would be fine. By the time you run into a situation where you need 31 splines you would want to put C clip eliminators on as well.

The 8.8 is a strong rearend. It is basicly a copy of a Chevy 12 bolt (internally) and will hold up to some serious power. Like everything it has it's limitations. I've seen some really nasty cars still running them. With the torque of a well built 460 I'd be putting some C clip elemnators on it so it uses a big wheel bearing that doesn't use the axle for the inner bearing race. Just like the 12 bolt Chevy this is a weak point. If he didn't want to yank out the 7.5 after putting in a 460 maybe he needs to rethinks his building plans. I have a 9 inch Currie in mine. It's overkill for my car but I like it that way. Tell your Cousin the best way to build a car is from the rear to the front. He has it a bit backwards. make sure the bases are loaded before hitting a home run.
