if you cant tell by looking at or or you cant find a tag take the cover off the spring for the trac lock is different in the 7.5. it has 4 little springs pushing side to side as the 8.8 has a single huge s shaped spring in it

Making a mailbox opener out of a 7.5 axle sounds like a bad plan. You would probably strip it out against that heavy mail box door just when you needed to get your lottery check out.
Seriously though, if you don't bang shift or do rev it up/drop the clutch launches the 7.5 will hold up okay. I had an 85, five speed GT that I drove hard and put lots of miles on. I did NOT do hard launches or bang shifting and it was still in good shape when I got rid of the car.
If you ARE planning on hard launches and bang shifting, however, find yourself an 8.8. They should be somewhat plentiful in the scrap yards as many 5.0 Mustangs were produced.

lol mailbox sounds cool. if it is the 8.8 its going into my gt turbo that im building. The 5.0 will go into my 70 f100 and the tranny as a spare for either one and there is a guy in town that will buy the body from me already.
