Default strong smell of gas after fillup

after i fill up with gas and then park my car for awhile, the inside smells like i poured it all inside. it doesn't seem to smell while i'm driving, it's just after it sits awhile. this will go on for about 1/2 a tank, then it goes away. i've removed all the trim panels in the trunk and have checked around the filler neck while pumping, and see no leaks. the smell appears to be towards the rear. are all the gas lines on an 86 vert steel? i don't seem to be getting less gas mileage so i'm kinda ruling out a leak. like i said it only happens for the first half tank. are there any rubber hoses along the way i should check?

did you check the filler neck where it connects to the tank? ..you can usually see a "stain" from the gas leaking from the filler neck on the lip below the filler neck

i had the exact same problem once. turned out the filler neck rubber piece tore when i replaced my fuel pump.

the sending unit and fuel pump gaskets are on top so you would have to drop the tank to check those. the filler neck gasket is on the side and easily visible without dropping the tank.

where in so.cal. are you?

I know you don't have a way to do this suggestion but if all else fails find a shop with a smoke machine, I have an adapter to screw on to fox tanks and I hook the smoke machine up to it and where ever the smoke appears will indicate the sorce of the leak
