306 advantages?

i got the opportunity to get a fresh 306 short block ...question is what would be the advantages of replacing my working 110k 302 for a fresh 306 ....considering all the time of swapping the blocks ? but a h/c/i swap is going to be done either way

What has been done to the 306?

250 dollars isn't much in machine work. I be a little hesitant unless the seller could tell me more about it. It is probably just a basic bore and new pistons/rings and the crank ground. It's hard to say without seeing it. At that price the assembly wasn't balanced to the new pistons so thats something to think about when you swing the tach deep. If your engine isn't burning oil or making noise you may want to stick with it. Unless you know who did the work buying stuff like that is a crap shoot.

your not going to see anymore hp with that 306 than you would with your 302. but if you can get it for a good price and know it was done right. then i'd pick it up just for the insurance of having a 0mile motor vs a 110k mile motor

Portmaster 12-03-2008 03:50 PM

What kind of price is he asking?

well im getting a good deal from a friend that wants my 92 motor so he can use untill he can get a 351 in his car because he doesnt want to use the 306 anymore ...he was going to use it himself so im not really worried about if its worth the money so much as if its worth swapping it out for the working 302 in my 95

i'd base it off your compression, and if your doing a cam anyways... it'll be the same amount of work really.

if the motor you have is really good on compression, just do the heads and intake and wait on everything else. thats the easiest route

If you value your friendship with this guy, pass on the deal. I can see some hard feelings written all over this deal. We call that a "Pig in a poke" or to better phrase your situation "A 302 in the hand is better than a 306 in the bush" Proceed with caution

well im trying to sell the motor for $450 basically because i really dont want to sell it because i can always use most of it on my 95 if i needed to so even if i cant use it now i could use it in the future

so assuming i cant sell my motor ...and i cant use the front accessories or intake for my 95 then i figured this isn't a bad deal
