1 pc. Rear Main Seal Question

very simple question. on a one peice RMS, which way does it go, does the flat side go towards the flywheel, or the rest of the engine?

86 5.0L 12-13-2008 03:41 PM

the same way the old one was in :p

lol, anyway I think the flat side goes to the flywheel, since that is how I screwed in some screws to get the old one out

FuzzyDiceRule 12-13-2008 03:44 PM

I dont remember, and i just checked the old crank and the damn seal was off...

FuzzyDiceRule 12-13-2008 03:48 PM

you sure, id rather not **** this up

86 5.0L 12-13-2008 03:49 PM

check the chilton manual, thats what I used

FuzzyDiceRule 12-13-2008 03:52 PM

it doesnt say, but it LOOKS like the flatside goes to the flywheel...

on a side note, should i just put assembly lube on it instead of oil?

nevermind, it says install with "spring side" towards engine, is that the side with the groove?

Shelty 12-13-2008 03:53 PM

the flat side faces the flywheel, Its only goes in one way tho....

Flat side out, a little oil on the inside lip of the seal. I like to just a light coat of RTV on the outside of the seal where it meets the block. Ive seen these seals leak arounf the outside. I put the RTV real thin and then drive it in. Make sure you work the seal up easy so the lip doesnt flip and tear. If the crank has a small grove where the old seal was you can buy a sleeve to repair it.

+1 on the rtv around the seal. i've learned the hard way, mine still leaks and i didn't use RTV :(

crusin92red5.0 12-13-2008 05:10 PM

and i didn't know there was a special tool to put it in

86 5.0L 12-13-2008 05:11 PM

I didnt need it, and I didnt use rtv and mine didnt leak :D

Of course Ford has the tool. As easy as it is to put the seal in it's a waste of money. If you do a bunch of them you can go to Wal-Mart and buy a hard plastic Glass thats the same size as the seal for 1.59 and use it and a plastic hammer to drive it in.

Most of them won't. I have had a few of them that had already been replaced by the owner. They had the bright Idea of driving a screwdiver under the seal and put a nice dig in the outer seal surface. I didn't see it and it leaked. After that they all get a coat of RTV. Very thin but no leaks since

yea I agree, I will use RTV on my next swap, I got lucky that mune had a nice smooth seal surface

I dident use rtv and mine don't leak, just make sure it goes in perfectly....use the old seal to hammer it in.

instead of making a new post, i figured id ask it in here since its some what related. As i previously stated i still have a leak from back there. i read/heard that you are suppose to put some rtv on the rear main caps where it meets the block., is this true? cuz i am curious. thanks
