Rear end (8.8 28 spline to 8.8 31 spline?)
hello, i have a 1992 5.0 lx mustang and my rear end is shot and was wondering if you can take out the stock 8.8 28 spline and put a 8.8 31 spline... what is the diffrence?? is it better? what will i loose or gain? the 31 spline that i found says its a 31 spline with 8 gear clutch versus standard 6 gear.. which i have no idea what that means lol... if anyone can help me out here that would be ggreat!! thanks

exactly as mjr says... you can re-use your old housing, keeping it installed if you wish. The best bet would be to talk to a shop asking them for prices and if you can bring a bunch of parts in and they will do it for you. You need:
2 x 31 MALE splined axles in 4 (stock) or 5 lug
a differential with 31 FEMALE spline (match with the alxes) you can get many different types of differiantals
you should also get new seals and bearings and think about other upgrades in the surrounding area... I like to upgrade an area surrounding the area im working on at the same time to save time! good luck
here is a kit for 4 lug but I dont know if it has the new bearings or seals..

That is correct... those are all the hard parts and truly its hard to beat the included ford trak-lok diff; its a good all-around unit.
However you would be well off to get new bearings and seals etc.. also think about your gear ratio; are you happy with what you have

If you're not drag racing the car, I'd stick with the 28 spline....But, if your plan on using slicks or a good DR (with some kind of power adder or a built NA Fox), 31 spline is an excellent upgrade!
...not much to change, carrier & axles!

Im probably gonna do the 31 spline conversion... i currently have 3:73 in the car... the stuff i have done is... b-cam, mac CAI, under drive pulleys, M.a.c ceramic coated headers (shorties), off road M.a.c h pipe, flow master mufflers, 50 short throw, cobra clutch.... i was thinking about switching to 4:10's when i re do the rear?? i herd from many people that if you drive a lot and on the park way they are not good to have... then i have herd from many people that have 4:10's that they are fine and drive daily... and drive on the parkway... what would you recomend??
