Default Rear Seal Leak, Brakes Stick

I just bought a 1980 Cobra. It's got an after market 302, C4 transmission, and a Ford 9" Rear end. I got an awesome deal on it, but the only major problem is the PO claims the seal in the rear end is leaking onto the rear brake.. and it causes them to lock up on occasion.

Does this sound plausible, and if not.. what does the problem sound like?

What seal would be leaking, and about how much would it cost to get replaced? I would fix it IF it was a quick job, but I work so much.. I really don't have the time to start on a project.

Yes, it is possible. If the axle seals leak gear oil onto the brake shoes, it can cause them to look up. Pull the wheels/drums and confirm this is the issue. The axles will come out by removing the 4 nuts and or bolts, (can't remember exactly how the axles are bolted in a 9", it's been a while) and slide out the axles. If I remember correctly, I think the seal sits in front of the bearing so the bearing will have to be pressed off to replace the seal. So replace the bearings and seals at the same time.

The above is if memory serves me. Like I said, it's been a while. I'm sure someone will be happy to post up if I'm incorrect.

I don't have the car at my house.. so I can't verify this right now, but I think it does have a cover. I could be wrong.. but either way, which way is it? Pull the wheels/drums .. or remove the rear cover?

If it has a cover it is not a 9''. If it has a removable center section it is a 9''
