oil burning, please help

My 132,000 mile '90 LX 5-spd has suddenly started producing oil smoke (out both tailpipes) intermittenly. It always made a small puff every now and then. I installed an off-road h-pipe and now its gotten worse. Were the cats covering up the problem before? There is no rhyme or reason to when it occurs. Sometimes it will do it on hard accel, sometimes on light accel. Often, I'll be idling at a stop light and a bunch of smoke will roll out, then later it goes away. The PCV is clean but I have to check the screen. Could the screen be the problem? Could a leaking intake gasket (under the manifold) occasionally be letting a big gulp of oil in? Or is it rebuild time?<IMG src=smileys/smiley6.gif border="0"> I hope not. The motor runs great now. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.</P>

ine doesthe same and my motor is strong ... i own an 8 GT with 164000 mileson it. Umm mine does i from a bad oil leak. Are you leaking oil?!? if not check your screen and if that isnt it maybe its tune up time. But your motor should have some life left on it if treated good

Well, I do have what I think is a rear main leak (it doesn't look like an intake rail leak but i could be wrong). This leak makes a mess of the undercarrage but I can live with that. Its the random large puffs of smoke that urk me. Could it be valve seals? Usually they make smoke on start up, but its a possibility. I know 90wt will solve my problem!<IMG src=smileys/smiley5.gif border="0"> heh, kidding.

any time is time for a rebuild especially for more torque and horsepower.

Sounds like some oil is getting by the seals or rings.<edited><editID>86lxconvert</editID><editDate>37930.9414699074</editDate></edited>

compression test? if they come out alittle bit low, squirt some oil on the walls of the cylinders and do it again, if the compression goes up you either have bad rings or the seat from the rings to the cylinder wall is bad. rebuild!

89.. is on the right track but I would keep driving it until you get your piece in place to rebuild or find a block and do the build up...if your using syth. oil switth to a 15w40 non-sythedic.will help a lil put in a higher number PVC Valve. wash down the engine too

When I bought mine I thought it was running pretty darned strong (~205hp at the tires with headers and an h-pipe and a bad maf)
But it was blowing a bit of smoke out the tailpipes. I drove it almost 300 miles the day I bought it, and even though it blew smoke I thought it was running really well.

Until we did a leakdown test on it and discovered that some valves were bad and at least one cyl had toasted rings.

I'd say if you've got the money, first do a compression and leakdown test, and then if it's obviously rebuild time, do the rebuild. Pick up some new heads while you're at it. :)

Well, I did a compression test and all is well in that department. All cylinders are good, strong and balanced. I guess this leaves a worn valve guide (and/or shot valve seal) or a leaking intake gasket as the culprit. I'm more inclined to believe its the intake. The valve train is nice and quiet and wore guides sometimes make a ticking sound. All the plugs looked good except no. 5 witch was definately the oil burner. Any other possibilities?
