Default Good deal on an Explorer engine?

Local bone yard has a complete 98 Explorer engine (intake to oil pan) for $500. They give a 60 day warranty so I'm not to worried about cracks, etc.

I've been looking around for a set of gt40P's heads and maybe a intake upgrade for my 90GT.
Seems alot of you guys run GT40P's and since mine is a daily driver, I just want a little more kick in the ***. Of course I would get a valve job on these heads......

Looks like a OK set of GT40P's heads will cost me around $300 alone. You guys think I should go for the entire engine for $500? Is it worth it?

don't forget you will get an increase in compression swapping these heads onto your motor, but the explorer motor has less piston hight so swaping the motor will not yield as much of a gain. just swap the heads/ intake onto your existing fox motor (my opinion)

you could probably buy a set of ported heads worked and an intake for less if you are going to have them worked. you would get more power too.

the explorer cam sucks though so swap that out if your going with the whole engine swap... plus the p heads don't really fit too many headers out there except for the specific p headers without modding what you have

You should try to find an engine with regular gt40s instead. Like other people said not too many headers are made for the gt40ps, and it is lame that they can't use the same ones.

94ford5liter.. what do you have dont to your car that makes it throw down 322 hp... just curious b/c you dont have a mods list.

And for my 2 cents on this post... use the P heads and a nice cam (not a letter cam) along with a valvetrain upgrade and you should see a good amount of power. I wouldnt use the exploder bottom end though.. Explorers get treated like taurus' do... very very badly. Its probably in worse shape than your current bottom end. Also, the higher compression of your stock motor and the forged pistons will be nice to have

Thanks for all the input guys....I plan on just using the heads and upper/lower intake from the explorer engine - and nothing more. I was thinking of running a e-303 cam with this combo.

I've been looking around for GT40 heads so I wouldn't have to mess around with headers.

I know alot of guys are saying just hold out for aluminum heads, but I'v had nothing but bad experiences with them, so for me cast iron heads are more of a preference based on my own experiences.

I was planning on offering the bone yard $450 cash, but now you guys have me thinking twice about this deal.
