Default question on heavy pinging at WOT

Tonight I noticed heavy pinging in my car at full open throttle. Rest of the time I don't really hear any though. I figured that the cobra just takes 87 because its not much different than the regular 5 liter, but I have 89 in it. I have the timing set at 10 degrees, it has new spark plugs, and the wires are good. My guess is the cap & rotor is bad or the distributor is bad itself, I remember having a similar problem in my last car, but i'm not 100 percent. Any suggestions would be great, thanks.

if all specifications are set to stock, and pinging is still occuring you can try premium gas but the 5.0's are designed to run on regular so my guess is you have excessive carbon build up in the cumbustion chambers/intake which will bump compression and therfore raise cylinder temp and cause detonation.......perform a good seafoam treatment and or induction clean/2 part BG treatment = a shop would do this....Seafoam = you can buy and do and it can be purchased at any local parts store

I bought the car less than a month ago, and a couple weeks ago I changed the spark plugs, oil, cleaned the air filter, and set the timing.

I ran a third of a can of seafoam by pulling the vacuum line off the cobra brake booster, and changed the cap & rotor. Now it has no ping at all at WOT. Seafoam is awesome stuff lol. I need to change the oil now right?
