That's my gallery. I put up a couple pictures of the engine so maybe you guys could give me some more details.

That's the opinion I was looking for. I got it for free, and didn't even really look at it. If it needs too much work and makes more sense to find something assembled, I'll do that.

Im just saying it can be done but why not get a short block that will hold up to 750 hp for 2 grand i mean to me less hassle less time= less money in the long run i can give you some websites if you want to look at short blocks

Hey everyone,
I'm a new member here. A guy on another message board gave me a 5.0L motor and a 4 speed manual transmission. The motor is in pieces, and I think it's missing the camshaft and pushrods. It came with a 2 bbl carb. I'd like to put the motor back together and switch it to fuel injection, and swap it into my 2nd generation RX-7 Convertible; the 'vert is heavy, and rotaries have no torque, I need piston power. I'd also really like to use a T-5 transmission rather than the 4 speed. The swap itself is no big deal, as there are bolt in kits to put the 5 liter into 2nd gen 7s, but I've never built an engine, and really, I don't know where to start.
I could really use some advice on how to figure out if the engine I have can even be converted to FI, or if I can use the T-5. I don't know what year the block is, I was just told it came out of a late 70s/early 80s Mustang. Is there any dead giveaway I can find on the engine that will give me this information?
I'd really like to get over the 300 hp/300 ft-lbs mark. As I have to get headers and a cam anyway, what would you guys recommend?
Thanks in advance!

Hey Alex, look at that... Two RX-7 guys. Scary.
Thanks to Alex's advice, I'm going to pick up an Explorer V-8 from my local salvage yard rather than dick around with the motor in the basement.
Question for you guys: Since the Explorer motor is mated to an automatic, and I want to use a T-5, other than flywheel, PP and clutch, what else do I need to do to it? Is there some sort of harmonic balancer or anything that needs to be changed/removed/whatever?
