5.0 Newbie...
Hey everyone,
I'm a new member here. A guy on another message board gave me a 5.0L motor and a 4 speed manual transmission. The motor is in pieces, and I think it's missing the camshaft and pushrods. It came with a 2 bbl carb. I'd like to put the motor back together and switch it to fuel injection, and swap it into my 2nd generation RX-7 Convertible; the 'vert is heavy, and rotaries have no torque, I need piston power. I'd also really like to use a T-5 transmission rather than the 4 speed. The swap itself is no big deal, as there are bolt in kits to put the 5 liter into 2nd gen 7s, but I've never built an engine, and really, I don't know where to start. I could really use some advice on how to figure out if the engine I have can even be converted to FI, or if I can use the T-5. I don't know what year the block is, I was just told it came out of a late 70s/early 80s Mustang. Is there any dead giveaway I can find on the engine that will give me this information? I'd really like to get over the 300 hp/300 ft-lbs mark. As I have to get headers and a cam anyway, what would you guys recommend? Thanks in advance! |
What kinda budget do you have? That's gonna dictate what you will be able to do the motor. You won't get to 300HP with just headers and a cam. You're gonna want a decent set of heads and intake. For the FI setup, you're going to need a computer and all the wiring.

sounds like you have a flat tappet equipped non roller cam block, in any event for it to work with the mustangs eec iv ecm ,You need to install a cam that carries the H.O firing order for the SEFI system to function properly, and I emphasize that!!! no way around it:D

...If you do not have a lot of experience rebuilding 5.0's, might be better finding a complete (turn key) engine with all the EFI wiring...

^^ I agree w/ these guys but if you decide to do it yourself DO YOUR RESEARCH first!!! dont just by parts as an impulse buy. Post your questions here nad everyone can help and answer what you need. I have been researching parts for 2 years before buying everything i need for my build!!

Hey guys, thanks for the advice (and for not flaming the newb.) I'll try to get everything out tonight and take some pictures so you guys can tell me what I've got.
