New Mustang Owner. 1987 5.0 conv.
Hey all,
I'm the proud new owner of a 1987 5.0 convertible that I found for $600. I will post pics soon. The car is consmetically exellent with no rust, dings, sratches, or faded paint. However, after the drive home last night form the house of the guy that I bought it from, I noticed that there is an exhaust leak (easy fix) and a lound knock/ping coming from the heads. Sounds like a bad rod of valve.
I just wanted to know where I should start on this project of mine. The car drives fine but don't want to risk blowing what little bit of engine I have left. Do you guys think I should fix the stock engine or pick a newer one from my local yard? Where can I find some info on what type of parts are compatible with this car like eddleblock and the such.

If you can pick up a Muscle Mustangs magazine, towards the front there is a company that sells stock short blocks for like $699, depends what your wanting to do though, if you stay stock I dont see nothing wrong with doing something like that. But some people are gonna tell you to just have it rebuilt by someone, which may be cheaper???? Dunno never had any engine work done so I dont have any prices for anything like that. Keep us updated.

Latemodelrestoration, mustangsunlimited, blueovalindustries, wmsracing, summit, any frpp dealers or if you pick up any mustang magazines you'll find pretty much anything your heart desires. Good luck and keep us in the know

Master rebuild kit from summit with forged pistons runs like $529. Then all you have to do is have the machine work performed on the engine. Or you could look into making a stroker motor but the costs are much higher.
