Default gas meter gauage

my gas meter gauge went out in my 93, i cant seem to figure out why nor can i fix it...ive had a mechanic look at it but he was no help..i traced most of the wires with a test light to see if it shorted some where down the line but had no luck, please help ive ran out of gas twice lol...thanks anything will help

More than likely it is the sending unit which is in the tank. It will need to be checked out to see if that is what is wrong with it.

replace sending unit that will probably fix it
the fuel gauge itself can go bad, seen it before

for the life of me i cant remember the tool but there is a unit your mechanic should be able to hook up to your sending unit the uses a range of resistance to make sure it is reading properly and he'd do the same to the gauge to make sure its within spec. one of them will be out of calibration and would need to be replaced. that would be the only way to tell without just slappin parts onto the car. and who knows...you could replace both and it ends up that some wire is grounding out or something. IMO find a better mechainc
