Shorty Headers???
I am wanting to buy a off road H-pipe for my 89 GT. What will hook up to factory headers, but later will hook up to a better header? I see some that will fit shorty headers, and other diff. sizes. What do I have?

I just got done putting bbk equal length shorties with bbk off road h-pipe and dumped some flowmaster original 40 series and it is loud. Almost to much interior resonance. If you are going to go flowmaster don't do the original 40 unless you don't care about talking to your passenger.

Mac catback has the best "tone" to me, use to have flowmasters and thought they were great, Mac are better by leaps and bounds.
there about the same volume, mac's are a bit louder, but my car gets twice the attention now.

First off you won't notice any power differance in egual length short tubes. You might pick up 1-2 ponies on the dyno witht he equal length headers. Most shorty headers are designed to work with stock exhaust so most exit like the original poorly designed header than came on your car. Most H and X pipes match up to the stock locations so not worries there. If you are looking for great tone and loud I do the shortys (about any brand you like) then instead of the H pipe I'd install a Mac Prochamber and 40 series flowmasters with 2.5 pipes to the rear. In my Chevelle (the last one) I had tuned 2.25 tubed long tubes into a 4 inch collector, 4 inch exhaust into 4 inch 2 chamber flowmasters and dumped at the rear. I had no problem with normal converstaion inside the car. I could hear my screaming just fine, lol (wasn't really bad at all other than setting off car alarms in every parking lot I drove the car in.)
