Default car is acting stupid

Ok, for the past few months, if im in 2nd gear, and bring the car up to like 3 and a half RPMS while driving, and nail it, my car sounds like it just starts backfiring and the entire car just looses all power. Or if im getting on the highway and go from 1st, to 2nd and bring it up to the same RPMS about it does the same thing and i have to left off the gas a little or it will just keep backfiring. It also does it in 1st gear if i take off to hard, or in 3rd sometimes depending on how high my RPMS are. But if im driving and i take an easy but bring the RPMS up it usually runs fine. What would cause this to happen. I noticed it started happening after i had to pass emissions and took my old H pipe out and put ones with cats back in and we also took the fuel regulator out. We also changed the spark plugs and everything to help pass emissions. We have put the h pipe back on and everything but now when i take off i noticed the car doing that. Im not sure why my car had a fuel regulator, i dont think i have any special injectors or anything and i have a stock intake and all so. Could cheap spark plugs cause my car to do this? Cause my dad kinda hates when i add stuff to my car and thinks its a waste of money and i believe he changed the spark plugs for me and probably bought cheap ones casue he thinks spark plugs dont help your car run any better unless you got a real beefed up car. Could the stock fuel regulator we put on cause this?

it smost liekly your EGR. i have the same problem. I am running way too rich because i have no cats and i have a header leak. my check engine light came on and i scanned it and it said the EGR valve was open, meaning the car is running too rich and EGR wont close during acceleration.

does it ping or anything? maybe your fuel system is a bit dirty??? just a suggestion! nice stang by the way, I have one just like it with my mods listed and chrome waffle star ponies. I had a similar problem and I cleaned my fuel system and jumped to #24 injectors and it helped. dont do the 24's though unless you have the right setup with mods.

Default RE: car is acting stupid

My car is pretty much doing the exact same thing. I can tell when the car is going to do it cause if I try stepping on the throttle harder and the car doesn't go much faster and the needle starts jumping, I know it will start popping if I keep my foot pressed on the throttle so I let off. If I don't let off it will pop until it decides to stop but it gives me a jump when it does stop. I have no idea what it is, and I think it could be absolutely anything but most likely the timing is off, but then again maybe not. It is very very annoying and for some reason it seems to be getting worse. What would throw the timing off if that's the case? I was also thinking that it could be bad 02 sensors I have brand new injectors and spark plugs on my 5.0 so I ruled those possibilities out. If you find anything out 88mustanglx, or if anyone else can help me I would really appreciate it.

I had the same problem, or at least close and it turned out my spark plugs were gapped way to big. I swapped out new adjustables and made sure they fit to factory spec... car ran like a charm up through 6000rpm. Good luck!
