Colud be just a bad head gasket. Which would be more likely if it is an iron head.
Get a coolant pressure tester. While cold start the car with the pressure tester connected and rev the engine, if the pressure goes up quickly you have cylinder pressure getting in to the coolant system. (the coolant needs to be cold to do this).
There is also a dye kit that you can get from a parts store that will indicate if you have combustion gases in the coolant system. A positive from either test will lead you to pull the heads and inspect the deck, heads, and gasket.
