Default pushrod question

hi i have a couple quick question about my pushrods that should be easy to ansswer. i removed mine and there all grimey with black sludge on themm i was wondering what i should use to clean with with. also i wwas wondering when u guys soak them in oil how do u label them so u know witch goes back where. i want to soak them in oil to pack them because i was getting bad vauvle train noises but i am unsure how to soak all them and keep track of witch goes to witch clynder and where. thanks

I let them sit in Castrol Supper Clean for 24 hours and then wipe them off and blow air through them. You could also use Easy Off oven cleaner and let them sit for about an hour. As for letting them sit in oil, it will not do any good, they are hollow tubes and the oil will run out once you pick them up. Check for straightness and clean them up.

Now just to be sure, you are talking about pushrods and not lifters, right?

I use brake clean to clean them off...and it won't matter about putting them back in same slots, if they are really sludged up, most likely source is the sludge is throughout the entire motor and could have a few clogged up lifters that aren't being pumped up and hence your getting valvetrain clatter.
