sounds like two seperate issues, 1 is possibly heat soak occuring to starter or bad cable doewn to the starter and the other ??? when it does that again you need to see if spark or fuel is missing, carry an old spark plug and can of starting fluid to test for the two.

if it stayed cranking with key in off position, it may have a bad starter selonoid. as for cable and starter, it's your call, if you wanna just slap parts go for it, I'd start with the cheapest =cable, I normally perform a voltage drop test but in your case, try replacing the cable first

when the prob occurs have a test light handy and see if there is current on the ignition feed wire to the selonoid, it may have a bad ignition switch that is triggering the selonoid.
