Default set timing, need help

ok i went and got a timing light i took out spout connecter and set the timing various times between 12-14 degrees. but everytime i reconnect the spout connector the timing jumps up 4 degrees. i dont know why. the only way it stays at the degrees i set it to, is if i leave the spout connector in. but then if i take it out, it drops 4 degrees. whats going on?

The engine is off when you remove the spout connector, right? After it's removed, then start the car. After you're done setting the timing, are you reconnecting the spout connector before or after turning off the car?

When you take it out you are basically setting a "rough timing". The spout connector basically lets the computer take over the timing. You can "fine tune" the timing once you have the "rough timing" set. Same principle but you have the spout in. You only want to go a slight few degrees with it in though. You don't want to go moving it like 5 or more. Under 4 should be ok.

If I'm not mistaken, after you have the timing to where you want it, shut off the car first and then tighten the distributor bolt and reconnect the spout connector. Shouldn't have any issues with it automatically adjusting.

Removing the spout allows you to set initial, the computer controls any 'mechanical/vac' advance.

take the spout out, set 12-14° timing..

Yeah, never adjust the timing with the SPOUT connector in.

i tried it all diff ways. turning car off and leaving it on before i put spout back in. no mater what i did, it would jump up about 4 degrees once spout was in. now what i cant figure out is if i should set it to 12 degrees and put spout back in, and let it read 16 degrees and LEAVE it...or adjust it back down to 12 degrees with spout back in?

should my timing read 12 degrees with spout in or spout out?
