Unhappy Clutch Fan or Electric???

Well I picked up a nice Mark VIII fan and started studying up on the hook up side of things and mounting. I have basically a street car that will see occasional auto cross. I was thinking of doing the electric fan to clean things up under the hood some, free up some HP, and possibly reduce the amount of dirt coming back to the engine. Now that I have started researching the method to hook it up, I am beginning to think about sticking with the clutch fan just for reliability. I have seen that I am limited on how I can control the fan because of the amount of juice it pulls. Just getting myself confused. Give me your opinions and setups.....

Thanks
Barry

if you are worried about how much juice it is going to pull, upgrade your alternator to an SN95 alternator (they produce more amps), electric fan all the way!!

Also get an automatic fan controller. Either adjustable or if it you chose one that has fixed temperature settings. Make sure the OFF setting is higher than your thermostat temperature.

I am in the process of doing the SN95 3G alternator upgrade, so that will soon be done. Just waiting on my powder to arrive so I can powder coat the housing. I understand about the adjustable controller, but I am just not sure how reliable any of the controllers are. What controller are you using on your Mark VIII fan?

I prefer electric fans because I don't want to spin a mechanical high rpm. A good thermostatic clutch mechanical fan will cool just fine. when the heat gets to certain point the fan clutch engages (like in heavy traffic) and cools the engine. When the engine gets at highway speed and cools the fan pretty much freewheels and draws hardly any parasitic loss off the crank. Electric fans became popular when most cars came with tranverse mounted engines and couldn't drive the a fan off the the accessory drive. Electric fans are great, A good thermostaticly controled clutch fan is as well. The mechanical fan has it's limits and if you stay within them you will be fine.
