Default 87 5.0 starting/idling problem

my brother just picked up a nice little 87 for a good price.

problem is it doesnt want to turn over, so we switched the battery out since the old batt read 10v on my dmm. go to start it, solonoid clicks but nothing else.
so im thinking starter, we pop start it and he drives off but the car does not want to idle. if you step on the break car dies, if you let up off the gas it dies.
he bought a starter and a alt (i did not tell him to buy the alt)

i plan on replacing the starter tomorow incase it is that but im also thinking it could be a relay of some sort.

any suggestions?

couple pics for some lookers

you can see my pretty litte thing in the background

****************************UPDATE**************** ***

ok i just got done replacing the solonoid, nothing, jacked the car up. hit the hell out of the starter, nothing.

started checking everything out find this clip is broken and doesnt stay latched. tape it on car doesnt want to turn over but i pop start it and it idles!
but i do need to replace this harness but i have no idea what the part is called or how to go about replacing it :/ nd ideas?

i realize it isnt safe but the car is going no where until we are done. i plan on replacing the starter tomorow if it doesnt rain.

ive got the same problem, did you ever find a cure?

im in the same boat, but with my 88 gt. i swear ive tried almost everything. cleaned the idle air control, bought a new throttle position sensor, new spark plugs, cleaned the tb, new fuel filter, ive got like ten month old gas in there so i added 4 gallons and put in fuel cleaner (heet). now i guess im just gonna have to check timing and check fuel pressure.

normally when the car dies when you let off the gas, it means the iac is stuck and not letting air get in
