priming the motor

RE: priming the motor
First take off a valve cover. Doesnt matter which, just remove one.
Remove the distributor(if you put it back in)
Grab a 1/4" Socket and an extention
Stick the socket+ext in the distributor hole down into an even smaller hole.
It should land on this small metal bit(shine a light in there to see it)
After you do this, Either hand crank it Counter Clockwise
Or Take a drill to it Counter Clockwise and spin the shaft for a little bit.
Make sure oil is comming out of the rockers and get it all nice and lubed.

I always use an old dist and gring it down to I can put my drill on it....turn the pump til you see oil out on the pushrods...put the dist back in and pull the coil wire and start the engine til you see atleast 20 psi on the gauge..reinstall coil wire and start engine and let idle more a min or 2 then slowely run the rpm up to 1000,back down,2000, back down,3000, back down,4000 back down...then check for leaks...set timing, check oil,water..etc...go drive it easy

Something to concider. Most machine shops have a machine they can do pre-start-up run on. Some places do it as freebe if you get your machine work done. That was the deal when I did my big block caddy. The put it on the machine and ran it at 500 RPM, oiled the engine, chacked oil press, checked comp, and just gave everything a looksee.
