Cranks, but won't start . . . Help.

Sorry, for being dense, but could you be . . .
more explicit on the technique for setting the timing? Assuming I would loosen the bolt that holds the distributor on place, so I can now rotate it, then what . . .
Also, I have a "pop-out" tire guage . . . the kind w/ swizzle stick type stem . . . will that work?
Thanks, for your patience . . .

Motor spins without trying to start?
1. Check spark, fuel, comp.
since the motor sudenly stopped without warning it can't be comp. So check spark. If you have spark, check fuel press. To check fuel press turn the key to acc, does the fuel pump start and quit? If it does that's a good sign. Now take a pen and open the cap on the schrader valve on the pass side of the engine and stick the pen in the valve to see if fuel sprays out. It's a crued way to check for fuel press but it will give you a rough idea if you have fuel press. If no fuel press change pump. if you have fuel press check to see if the injectors fire by using a noid light. If you have all these it could be your timing, but I think its's unlikely because the engine doesn't even try to start. If the timming is off it will usually either sputter and trey to start or kick at the started.
