Isn't the switch inside the steering column, or is it elsewhere?

Well, I will buy both the solenoid and the ignition switch, I read I also need a Torx T27 bit. All that will cost me about $30, I would rather just do it now and know I won't have to do it later. If it won't start after that, I have no clue what I am going to do...lol.

I take it the solenoid issue is a common problem? I had a co-worker tell me he had an 89 Mustang and the solenoid went out 3 times, so he always caried a screwdriver around with him so he could start it...lol. Is there a reason for them going out so often?

buy a test light, locate the problem through proper troubleshooting and then there will be only buying a part you know you need and you won't be saying...if I slap this part and it doesn't work then I don't know what I'm gonna do
