whats a normal price on t5 rebuild?
Hey guys. Soon its gonna be time to rebuild my t5 in my 95 svt cobra. I called around trying to just get an idea of what a shop would cost. I've been getting quotes of 5-700 in labor alone. I've found all the parts I need as far as I know and its only 300 for the kit. I have a step by step guide on how to disassemble and reassemble it but I was thinking if I could scrape up the extra cash and drag it out long enough it might be worth it to have an actual shop do it because other than changing fluid and removing the trans for a clutch swap, I've never dealt with transmissions. So what should a labor costs be on rebuilding a t5 as far as a normal rebuild of bearings, synchros, and blocking rings? I really don't want to spend that if I could do it myself, I would just hate buying the $300 worth of parts and then end up blowing the trans completely if I did something wrong.
Thanks in advance for any help

before buying any parts the tranny should be torn down and all bearings , blocker rings, shyncronizer hubs/teeth inspected on all gears, and sliders should be inspected, , generally I buy the rebuild kit from www.thegearbox.org for 200 beans and if it needs a gear or a slider I buy accordingly from them, but if all my parts tally past 500, IMO it is not worth rebuilding a t-5, but with you having to pay labor which often ranges from 300-500, it quickly add up and make it not worth your cost to redo it, it'd be cheaper to buy one already done, t-5's are only worth rebuilding if you can do it yourself IMO

i rebuilt one t5 for a friend for 150 bucks. he needed all new gears and everything. damn near cost him 800 dollars by the time it was all said and done.
i charged 220 each for the two t56's i rebuilt cause they were a little more involved. but since they brought me two of them i cut em a deal and only charged them 400 total labor.
dont pay someone to rebuilt a t5

I want to go with a new t5 but I keep hearing that other than 94 and 95 transmissions being different from foxbody t5s and because my cars a cobra I hear that it has a different mounting location for th crossmember. I was looking into astroperformance transmissions until I heard about the crossmember being different.

and mjr46 I found one of your old posts where you recommended someone to the gearbox and thats where I got my prices but I didn't know if I needed this kit

or this kit

I don't remember if my car has the borgwarner or the wc. also neither mentioned blocking rings unless their included in the synchro.

the only difference between the 200 dollar kit and the 300 dollar one is the brand name of the bearings used, the 300 dollar ones use oem torrington bearings where as the 200 dollar kit uses KOYO bearings which are good bearings, use 'em all the time......as for the rebuild on a cobra t-5 your trans is basically the same as a fox t-5 except for the fact that the input shaft is longer, a fox t-5 can be converted to use with an sn-95 with a simple input swap, but one difference in a cobra t-5 is the input shaft uses a pocket roller bearing on the input where as regular wc t-5's use a tappered roller bearing

just curious is there an actual difference with the below quote from that thegearbox? I just really don't want to buy the wrong kit.
"There are some T5 world class units that do not fit into the year ranges given.
If you are unsure and the unit is disassembled, if it has a three piece 1-2 synchro ring assembly & a paper or composite lined 3-4 ring, it is a world class. -OR-"
ok so if I did end up finding a t5 out of or for a 94-95 it would work for my car? its just certain internals and gear ratios that are different not the crossmember mounting location?

to my knowledge the mounting locations are the same the bellhousing on the sn-95's is deeper hence the longer input shaft, before ordering the kit call Kevin at the gear box and tell him what you have, he knows his stuff and will make sure you get the right stuff, normally I disassemble the t-5 first and look to see what I have internally, all t-5's after 85 are world class if in a 5.0
